Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis that affects the spine and other parts of the body. It causes inflammation and pain in joints, including those in the spine, hips, and shoulders. The cause of this condition is not fully understood but there are some theories about its root cause.

The most accepted theory is that ankylosing spondylitis is caused by a combination of genetic factors and environmental triggers. It appears to be related to certain genes which make someone more likely to develop this condition when exposed to certain environmental triggers such as infections or smoking.

It also appears that people with ankylosing spondylitis have an overactive immune system which leads to inflammation in their joints. This can result from defects in proteins responsible for controlling inflammation or from changes in how these proteins interact with other molecules inside our bodies.

Finally, research suggests that hormones may play a role in causing ankylosing spondylitis as well. Hormones regulate many bodily processes including inflammation so it’s possible they could have some influence on this condition too.

At this time there isn’t enough evidence to definitively identify the root cause of ankylosing spondylitis but research continues into potential genetic and environmental factors as well as hormonal influences that could be involved in its development.
